A Framework for Interpreting Bridging Anaphora
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we present a novel framework for resolving bridging anaphora. We argue that anaphora, particularly bridging anaphora, is used as a shortcut device similar to the use of compound nouns. Hence, the two natural language usage phenomena would have to be based on the same theoretical framework. We use an existing theory on compound nouns to test its validity for anaphora usages. To do this, we used human annotators to interpret indirect anaphora from naturally occurring discourses. The annotators were asked to classify the relations between anaphor-antecedent pairs into relation types that have been previously used to describe the relations between a modifier and the head noun of a compound noun. We obtained very encouraging results with an average Fleiss’s κ value of 0.66 for inter-annotation agreement. The results were evaluated against other similar natural language interpretation annotation experiments and were found to compare well. In order to determine the prevalence of the proposed set of anaphora relations we did a detailed analysis of a subset 20 newspaper articles. The results obtained from this also indicated that a majority (98%) of the relations could be described by the relations in the framework. The results from this analysis also showed the distribution of the relation types in the genre of news paper article discourses.

Global Inference for Bridging Anaphora Resolution
We present the first work on antecedent selection for bridging resolution without restrictions on anaphor or relation types. Our model integrates global constraints on top of a rich local feature set in the framework of Markov logic networks. The global model improves over the local one and both strongly outperform a reimplementation of prior work.
متن کاملUsing Relations to Interpret Anaphora
In this paper we present a novel framework for resolving bridging anaphora. The new framework is based on the core set of relations that have been used to describe an entirely different linguistic process, the process of generating a compound noun from two different nouns. We argue that the linguistic processes of compound noun generation and the use of NP anaphora are alike hence have to use t...
متن کاملCascading Collective Classification for Bridging Anaphora Recognition using a Rich Linguistic Feature Set
Recognizing bridging anaphora is difficult due to the wide variation within the phenomenon, the resulting lack of easily identifiable surface markers and their relative rarity. We develop linguistically motivated discourse structure, lexico-semantic and genericity detection features and integrate these into a cascaded minority preference algorithm that models bridging recognition as a subtask o...
متن کاملEnhanced Word Representations for Bridging Anaphora Resolution
Most current models of word representations (e.g., GloVe) have successfully captured finegrained semantics. However, semantic similarity exhibited in these word embeddings is not suitable for resolving bridging anaphora, which requires the knowledge of associative similarity (i.e., relatedness) instead of semantic similarity information between synonyms or hypernyms. We create word embeddings (...
متن کاملA Survey of Studies of Bridging Anaphora
This paper aims to review previous major studies of bridging anaphora resolution and generation in terms of their major views, advantages and inadequacies of each theory from the psychological, coherence-based, corpus-based, relevance-theoretic, cognitive, formal and computational perspectives. Then a critique of previous approaches to BA resolution and generation are made for future studies.
